An Insight into Barra Honda National Park
|
| "A good stop off on the way to the central Nicoya pacific coast" |
This park is just the other side of the new Tempisque bridge and on the way to many spots
on the north pacific coast such as Samara, Nosara and Tamarindo. The calcareous formations
of the limestone caverns at Barra Honda National Park are the main visitor attraction. Only
about 50% of the complex has been explored to date. The caves range from a few feet to over
780 feet deep.
The Terciopelo cavern, open to the public, is an extremely vertical descent.
Climbing gear is available from the park rangers, who will guide you through the cave descent.
The abundant varieties of cave formations are in pristine condition. Advance reservations
are required for spelunking. The caves are not open in the wet season due to the danger of
flooding. There are hiking trails and scenic overlooks throughout the tropical dry forest
of the park.

| "Stalagmite or tite?" |
(From: www.maptak.com): The highest point Cerro Barra Honda 445 m, (1,468 feet) provides a spectacular view
of the surrounding countryside.
There are trails, shelters for picnics, latrines,
drinking water and camping area. You may be able to observe monkeys, anteaters, and
scarlet macaws. In the caves there are blind fish and salamanders that have adopted
to the darkness.
