An Insight into Braulio Carrillo National Park.

This park is easily accessed on the way to the Caribbean coast about an hour north east of San Jose. Braulio Carrillo National Park has several dormant volcanoes: Cerro Chompipe, Cerro Cacho Negro, Cerros las Tres Marias. Barva Volcano presents several crater lakes: Barva, Danta and Copey. Barva is one of the few volcanoes that tourists can climb - it has green pastures at its base and a majestic cloud forest near its summit. From: www.costaricamap.com/ing/biopbraulio.html
"Perpetual mist shrouds parts of the park"

Cloud and rain forest covers the park, which abounds with flora and fauna in multiple climate zones, many rivers and waterfalls. According to the Minae web site: Restrooms, picnic areas, and facilities are available only at the ranger stations, and it is highly recommended that further exploration of the park be undertaken with an experienced guide.

There are two entrances into the park, the main one being just south of the Zurqui tunnel, where the ranger station is located. Across the road from this is the Capulin trail which takes about an hour and a half walk.

For more information on the park may we recommend:"The Quetzal and the Macaw" - the story of the founding of the Narional Parks of Costa Rica and the particularly valiant efforts of two Costa Ricans - Boza and Ugalde. The tireless efforts of these two geniuses with a real vision of the future are an inspiring tale of possibilities for other developing countries. "Balancing political enlightenment with environmental concerns" maybe one synopsis that describes the efforts of many people to make the parks system a reality. In 1969 not a single acre was under protection from the government - now over a quarter of the country is protected. This book is out of print but email us for a source which has some used ones.
