An Insight into Bribri

Both a town and an indigenous culture that is well worth a visit if you can make an extra day. Located 45 miles south of Puerto Limon, this small town and the nearby Indian reserves are a center for green banana plantations.

Contact Beatrice above to plan rural trips ahead of your visit or if you are in the area of Puerto Viejo/Cahuita there are various locals who can organize day trips by canoe into the interior.

There is much to absorb and understand about this interesting culture and you won't learn it all in a day. But perhaps take home a memory - some local chocolate and their pretty hunting bow and arrows sold along the roadside.

May we recommend some reading before you come: "Taking Care of Sibo's Gifts" by Palmer, Sanchez and Mayorga. "An environmental treatise from Costa Rica's Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve. From the introduction "The Kekoldi Reserve has fewer than 200 people" as of the writing of this slim volume - their physical and cultural survival is threatened . . . the Kekoldi people want their struggle to be known". There is very little published in english about them - find a copy somehow for a senstive view of their ways.
