An Insight into Cahuita.

"El Encanto - as it's name says"

This pretty little beach village is about 4 ½ hours south east not far from the Panamanian border and a good access point for the BriBri indigenous people.

It is dominated by descendants of Jamaicans and is a bastion of Costa Rica's Rastafarian culture. Cahuita is very small, has a couple of good restaurants and a few nice places to stay including our friends beautiful El Encanto on the beach. We recommend this place as a getaway from everything - peaceful and relaxing.

To learn more about this area before you come check out: "What Happen" - an oral history of the Talamancan coast. What a surprising delight! First hand recollections from people (now mostly gone) of the first settlers and subsequent development in Cahuita and the surrounding area. The discussion above reminds me how interesting first hand accounts can be. If you are going to the Caribbean coast we'd HIGHLY recommend this unique book.
