An Insight into Cano Negro

Located north of Volcan Arenal, this reserve protects a lush lowland basin famous
for the migratory birds that make this a stop off point going
north or south. Birds (specially the water varieties), turtles, crocodiles and caimans are
in abundance here in the black waters that this place is named for.
In addition Rio Frio makes an ideal waterway for
guided boat tours. This large 10,000 hectare refuge is important as a
wintering (October to April) site for many migrant waterfowl and a year-round habitat for
resident wetland species.
