An Insight into Chirripo National Park/Mountain

"How to get there - from Maptak"
This is the highest mountain in Costa Rica. This is a huge park of over 50,000 hectares and a number of fascinating ecosystems. It is a 10-hour hike to the shelters on top of the mountain. This climb passes through montaine rain forest, before finally emerging into a sub alpine rain panorama.

The mountains in this area are covered in thick primary cloud and rainforest to about 9,000' elevation. From there on up wet desert is the primary ground cover.

The high humidity and rain fall foster an amazing array of mosses and epiphytes on the branches of the forest trees.

25,000 years ago the area was covered by glacial ice. This glacier formed during the last of the Great Ice Ages when much of the northern hemisphere was also beneath ice.
"Forces of nature on Chirripo"
A dozen or more small glacial lakes, piles of rounded rocks and U- shaped valleys all testify to the former ice cover. Access to this area is limited so book ahead if you want to hike the mountain.
