An Insight into La Guacima.

"Our yellow bee"

You might think of it as a "butterfly factory". About 8km from Alajuela on a road that is a bit difficult to find (most taxis know the way). It is best to visit the farm when it is sunny (mornings in the rainy season), when butterflies are most active. The Butterfly Farm opened in 1983 and was the first commercial butterfly farm in Latin America. They ship world wide and are supplied from throughout Costa Rica. Regular tours are available - visitors are led through "the remarkable metamorphosis of these insects and their importance in nature". Remember butterflies don't do cloudy days! Visit La Guacima from your airport hotel or maybe on the way to the Pacific coast. Another great place to see butterflies ion their natural settings is the La Paz waterfall gardens which has a huge butterfly enclosure.
