An Insight into Las Juntas de Abangares.

This village is at the base of the Cordillera de Tilaran (ya, that will help
you find it eh? A bit south of Canas on the map). Is one of Costa Rica's prettiest villages, splashed with
colorful flowers and trim pastel painted houses. When gold was discovered
in 1884 many people came from all over the world to try and exploit the
opportunity. In their heyday, the gold mines employed nearly a thousand
workers, but were also the scene of a violent labor dispute in 1911.
The Eco-Museum was developed around the ruins of one of the oldest gold mines
in the region, where some of the old machinery, hand tools and
infrastructure can be observed. The surrounding area is forested to a
large extent and provides good opportunities for bird watching and other
nature observation.
The town of Las Juntas de Abangares is located six
kilometers northeast of the Inter-American Highway (the turnoff is 24 km.
south of Caņas).
We'd suggest dropping off at Las Juntas on your way to Rincon de la Vieja
(excellent volcano or volcanic mud springs hike).
