An Insight into Limon - center of the Caribbean coast

"Caribbean Sloth"
Limon is the major port on the Caribbean coast - trucks, oil, cargo and all the acoutrements of a somewhat lazy tropical port.

Just north is Moin an easy entrance to the amzing jungle canals leading to Tortuguero. South is the delightful undeveloped village of Cahuita.

If you are visiting this area we urge you to grab a copy of "What Happen" - you'll find a review at our sister site here: this is a page of links and book reviews. What Happen is an oral history of this coast and will give you an insight into the history and culture of the area. Highly recommended!

Limon has a colorful Afro-Caribbean flavor that is yet "another Costa Rica". This area was ignored for many years by the central government and shares neither the people nor the practices of the rest of Costa Rica. A variety of English dialects are spoken here, including a Jamaican English and a patois called mekatelyu.

Limon has a 24 hour street life and its Carnival is worth a visit if you are in the area at the time. We do not advise bringing any valuables to street activities.

Does anyone know why the word Caribbean has 2 "bb"'s? If you'd like to visit Limon email us at: InsightCostaRica for information or ideas?
