An Insight into Malpais and Santa Teresa - for a romantic getaway

"Sunset near Malpais"

These two villages are famous for their surf and for their remote- ness. Don't expect much tourism devel- opment and you won't be disapp- ointed if you want to get away from it all. There are a few nice hotels and the place is most easily accessed from the south.

We tried getting there from the north and the drive in a big 4WD proved to be "our most interesting driving experience in Costa Rica". One day they will make roads into this delightful little area and then it will be all downhill, eh? For now this place is best reached from the Puntarenas Ferry, drive quickly past Tambor, bypass Montezuma (maybe stay awhile, it is a nice little "hippy" town from the 60's) and on to Mal Pais.

Did we say romantic getaway? We like this area a lot as it is just so remote. This is what some areas were like years ago. All you need is a lack of roads! Bring a 4WD and have some fun. A day trip from Montezuma perhaps?
