An Insight into Manzanillo.

"Caribbean beach near Manzanillo"
Named for its great Manzanillo trees - this beautiful place is one of the better kept secrets of Costa Rica.

The park was a recent addition to the Costa Rican park system and one of a growing number of protected areas that includes new marine environ- ments. The five- kilometer stretch off the coast from the tiny village of Manzanillo to the area known as Punta Mona (Monkey Point) is populated by more live coral than is found on the reef at Cahuita to the north, though these corals are smaller.

The refuge extends to the Sixaola River, which forms the border with Panama. Several other important habitats are protected in the southeastern sector of the refuge, including a sea turtle nesting beach, an estuary with a large population of red mangrove that serves as a spawning site for Atlantic Tarpon, oysters, and many other marine organisms.

There is also a large area of swamp forest in which the most common plant is the Raphia Palm having the distinction of being the plant with the largest leaves in the world, since each frond can reach lengths of 12 m. or more. (This description came in part from the ICT web site).

A trip to Cahuita, Manzanillo and the general area will certainly be the one of the most relaxing experiences of your vacation. We like this part of Costa Rica a lot.
