An Insight into Monteverde.

Monteverde is located in La Cordillera de Tilaran, and Monteverde means "Green Mountain". Another way of finding it is a little easier - head west from San Jose and take a right a few kilometers after the White Horse restaurant along the Pan American highway. You are about to get on one of the bumpiest roads in Costa Rica.

Monteverde is one of the most idyllic settings in Costa Rica (despite the bumpy road into town). The majority of hotels are in the Santa Elena area and the park is a few kilometers from there.

Monteverde is actually a sprawling agricultural community which includes the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. In Monteverde you should visit the art galleries, the Bajo del Tigre (Jaguar Canyon) and the Cloud forest Preserve with a variety of different plant and animal life. We always advise a guide on your first visit to any of Costa Rica's parks - you will see at least 10 times more things with the aid of a trained eye.

There is more: the Heliconia Cloud Forest Reserve, Monteverde Nature Center and Butterfly Gardens and Monteverde Orchid Garden.

Oh and did we mention the frog farm? On our last trip we enjoyed the canopy walk (NOT zip line) at Selvatura and the bug man's museum. When you get to Monteverde make sure you ask the hotel owner or receptionist for their favorite things locally.
