An Insight into Poas Volcano

30km up hill from Alajuela. Start early, say at 7am, which usually assures you a clear view. Poas is a strato volcano that soars 2,708 meters above sea level and is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in Costa Rica. Here's some pictures from the recent eruptions etc of Poas Volcano. Lately some good sulphurous venting can be seen around the sky blue lake in the center.

It certainly is the easiest Volcano to get to in Costa Rica. From a university web site, ". . . there are two crater lakes at or near its summit. Poas has erupted at least 39 times since 1828 and is in state of nearly continuous mild activity. Most of the eruptions are phreatic, caused by the interaction of lava and the water in the Crater Lake. Explosions vary in strength. Some explosions have ejected material about 1,500 feet (500 m) above the lake."

For the moment the volcano is pretty quiet. Most days you will see some steam and sulphur emissions as long as you get there before the clouds move in.
