An Insight into Siquirres

"From La Colina"
This town is 49 km north west of Limon with big banana plantations. The town is near of the Rio Reventazon and the Rio Pacuare (famous with white-water rafters). There is an interesting essay (thanks to Sharon) here: www.bjmjr.com/afromestizo/costa_rica.htm dealing with the nature of this part of Costa Rica. In the Guapiles/Siquirres area, and, in fact the area around Limon, mention is often made of the "European" or "white" characterization of Costa Rica, and is widely accepted.

A review of history before the San Jose-Limon Railroad, with the importation of Jamaican laborers, seems to show that there were "Afromestizo" people living in the southwest and west (Guanacaste) of Costa Rica from the mid-1560s on. Many were brought into Costa Rica as slaves and some migrated south from Nicaragua and North from Panama and LATER moved to the Caribbean coast to settle among the Jamaican black population.
