An Insight into Tortuguero National Park

"From La Colina"

This park named after its turtles has many other kinds of mammals, fish and birds - along with Corcovado National park, Tortuguero has one of the most bio-diverse areas in Costa Rica. There are no roads at all so you either fly in by little plane or take a boat ride - the preferred way. The boat ride takes you through a beautiful jungle - we have seen howler monkeys, crocodiles, bats, toucans and more including the paw prints of a jaguar. In the turtle laying season (July to October) there are night visits (restricted #'s of people) to the turtle laying areas - a quite amazing and heartening sight. There are a number of comfortable and rustic lodges at Tortuguero village. The trip for us to Tortuguero though is really the journey there along the rivers and canals of north eastern Costa Rica.
